A taste of Kaqchikel at the dinner table

Location

Homestay, San Jorge, SO
Guatemala

It's still raining here in Antigua. Any more rain and this town will start to resemble a single storey Venice. At least it's giving me time to catch up on web type stuff.

This Intrepid tour is about to come to an end and looking back on the last 16 days I'd have to say the highlight has to be the homestay. We stayed two nights in San Jorge with a local family.

Just eating a simple home cooked meal and playing football with the kids has been more exciting and interesting than all the ruins, bars, beaches and chicken bus rides. At other times on the trip I had been flapping the jaw a fair bit but come meal time I sat in silence and just listen the a family mealtime conversation in their local Mayan dialect. I couldn't understand any of the words but the sounds were so beautiful and from the gestures I could ge the general gist of it.

Well done to Intrepid for including this on the itinerary. Hotel rooms the world over are more or less the same but only in a homestay in Guatemala can you learn a bit of Kaqchikel while breaking tortilla.
