It was the last thing I expected to see when I was given the tip that Matsumoto was a unique place to visit.

It was always good fun when someone in high school art class made some clay genitals. Usually the amusement, and artwork, was only temporary as the teacher rarely let such objects into the kiln. In Matsumoto however the teenage obession with the penis seems to be encouraged.

At the Matsumoto Museum, opposite the castle, there is a display of large wooden penis''. Behind the most impressively sized objects are pictures of school children making, playing with (not in the Larry Flynt sense) and sitting prouding in public with them.

I was unable to read any of the signage or labels that went with this display and they didnt have an English translation. Perhaps it is better that way, funnier at least. I feel a bit easier now that I know the natural instinct of young boys to make huge penis'' is encouraged somewhere on this earth.

Oh yeah, the castle was really interesting too!
