It's just like Cairns...without the box jellyfish.

I can't remember who it was that said it but now that I'm here I do vaguely recall someone telling me they thought Kota Kinabalu reminded them a lot of Cairns. Day activities include scuba diving, white-water rafting, boat trips to the nearby islands. Architecturally its also similar - the height of the buildings and grid of wide avenues. If I close my eyes (and maybe my nostrils) it almost could be Cairns.
