Flying into Cancún late last night after a whole day waiting at Houston airport probably didn't put me in the most positive frame of mind. That and paying three times as much to get from the airport to my hostel as I had planned. On the upside the 40 or so minute shuttle ride did give me a look at the tourist enclave know as the Zona Hotelera (hotel zone). It is this that's given me my first impression.
With its huge (and I mean HUGE) hotel complex after hotel complex punctuated only by the occasional glitzy chain restaurant and cheesy mega nightclub Cancún, to me, can be summed up as 'Vegas on the beach'. If you love Vegas and love the beach then Cancún is probably for you.
I arrived at my hostel (nowhere near the hotel zone) to found I'd just missed the excursion to to the 'rain' party of one of the mega nightclubs. From what I could tell it was more or less a foam party where someone forgot to put in the detergent to make the suds. The hostel is very nice. There's a leafy backyard and chef on hand to cook you breakfast and dinner. This morning I was woken up by what sounded like a marching band. I'll have to check that out and see if its a festival or daily occurrence. If it is daily earplugs might be my next investment.
This morning I'm off to explore the town a little bit, see if I can find transport for tomorrow to Chichen-itza and maybe spend a few hours on the beach doing nothing at all. Oh, and tonight there's a foam party on at the club. I guess they found the bottle of detergent after all.
