The top news story in the Fiji Sunday Times today is that 60 Fijians have sued the British government. Their successful court case won them compensation for the ill effects caused by nuclear tests conducted in the Pacific between 1952 and 1958.
The irony is that this win has come at a time of marshal law in Fiji where the constitution has been suspended, the courts dismissed and foreign journalists expelled.
Today is Sunday and the newspapers can be forgiven for being heavier on the 'entertainment' pieces. With that said on page 6 there are 2 political articles, one on Kevin Rudd and one on the latest Berlusconi scandal. The overt omission is any articles that even hint at the current political situation in Fiji.
For the throngs of Aussie tourists holidaying in the tourist enclave of Denarau life continues as normal. There is no military, no protests, no one being deported or detained in their hotels. Just a couple of smiling security guards as you cross the moat-ish canal that technically makes this patch of land an island. I suspect this will continue to be the case. No matter who is running the country or how they're running it everyone sees how important tourism is for this economy.
