Berlin

Heading home...again

It's been a fun year of living and working abroad. There's plenty more travelling coming up but now I'm glad to be returning home for a while.

The year started in Brighton, England with the family. It will end with the family too, this time back home in Sydney.

A week back in Berlin

"Mochtest du ein bissen Aussie?"

4 countries in 3 days - A doorstop tour of Western Europe

When I heard my parents were coming over to Germany to visit me I thought it would be a nice idea to hire a car and see some of the countryside. The idea was good enough but I got a bit carried away with what were could see in five days. We didn't get to all the countries on my whirlwind schedule but with the exception of Switzerland we did remarkably well.

Tying one on - bars and clubs in Mitte

On Matt's last night in Berlin we decided to hit the clubs in search of the famous Berlin techno beats. It being a Thursday and winter which limited our walking distance to Mitte we took off down Rosenthaler Strasse in search of Matrix. On our way Dante and the Sophienklub weren't happening and as always AM to PM looked bad.

Fünf, vier, drei, zwei, eins

Christmas and New Years in Berlin.

Frohe Weihnachten

Merry Christmas.

From Aussie to Ossie

It's cold, damn cold.

Back in Berlin

At least this time you can get cold beer.

Beer, bockwurst and buildings

Two weeks in Berlin have flown by so fast. Staying with Nick and Natalie has been the most welcomed change to hostel hopping. Although it has at times felt like a hostel with the steady stream of arrivals, departures and re-arrivals. Everyone came here for the German version of Nick and Natalie's wedding but at various points before and after the big day have taken side trips to conferences and universities in other cities.

Loverules - The Berlin Love Parade 2003

Half a million people dancing in the street is a pretty cool sight. It was enough to make me forget I'm not that fond of techno music.

After the parade finshed at about 11 we headed to a quiet bar in the former east berlin where we could look up from our beers and see bullet holes from WWII still decorating the facade.
